Discovering Literature Through Jakarta Islamic Book Fair 2022

Gambar
On August 7, 2022, I attended the Jakarta Islamic Book Fair at the Jakarta Convention Center. I went there with my college friend Intan, and we had a great time touring all the book stands and meeting a famous writer. The Jakarta Islamic Book Fair is an annual event that takes place in Jakarta and features Islamic books, literature, and associated products. Typically, the fair includes book exhibits, seminars, talks, and other activities connected to Islamic culture, education, and literature. When it came to literature, there were so many options to choose from! We were particularly interested in literature books, so we spent most of our time perusing novels and poetry collections. I bought a few classics, including Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, Wira Nagara's Distilasi Alkena, and Chairil Anwar's Kerikil Tajam and yang Terempas dan yang Putus. Intan purchased the novel Limitless by Nadhira Afifah. Besides that, meeting Asma Nadia, a well-known writer in...

Jakarta Takes a Stand: Banning the Dog and Cat Meat Trade in 2023

Jakarta has declared that the commerce in dog and cat meat would be prohibited in 2023, indicating its commitment to animal welfare and public health. This ban, which went into force in 2023, is a big step forward in maintaining animal welfare and protecting public health. The decision to outlaw the trade was motivated primarily by worries about animal welfare, as the practice of slaughtering and consuming dogs and cats has long been a source of contention. The ban represents a significant shift in Jakarta's stance on this topic, aligning the city with global trends toward respecting animal rights and preventing animal abuse. Graphic footage showed the horrific conditions in which dogs and cats were housed, transported, and butchered in a video titled "The Ban on the Consumption of Dog and Cat Meat," broadcast by TvOneNews on YouTube. The ban intends to put an end to such cruel acts, ensuring that these sentient beings do not suffer needlessly. Another significant aspect ...

I See, I Feel, I Write

Before entering the world of digital creators, Miftahullah Ilmy Zururi was a poet and novelist. From the cubicle of his bedroom door, in his solitude, he dives into the words and circumstances around him that produce beautiful writing. His poems were included in 4 books of Poetry Anthology in 2020 and she published her first novel entitled "Embun di Atas Bunga Matahari" in 2021. The other side is his view of life that he has lived for 23 years.  He often realized situations that were not to proper human values. From several poems that have been published in  social media, it can be seen the writings of poems written by Miftahzururi, most criticize social circumstances, such as his poem entitled  "Kamar Mandi Sekolah"  This can be seen by his background as a school student who often sees unexpected things such as strange events that occur at school which should be a comfortable place to seek knowledge and student interests. From this anxiety, he began to...

My Pet

Gambar
My first pet was a little turtle I got in Ancol at kindergarten graduation. My father told me, it was my graduation gift. The turtle was placed in a small house-shaped aquarium, with some stones for my turtle to sunbathe. When I got home, I showed off my new pet as I had just received a glowing trophy.  My eyes lit up and a smile didn't stop adorning my lips. When I eat, I always feed my turtles. "Let's eat together so that we can grow up together." When I sleep, I place the aquarium on my study table, "my bedroom is yours", I muttered while stroking the shell. Unfortunately, my happiness felt so short, I hadn't even had time to give it a name. I still remember how loud my crying was when I woke up the next day. My turtle does not move in the slightest, it is stiff with its head not getting into its shell. My mother tried to calm me down, but I ignored her. I just want my turtle back. I learned a valuable lesson back then. I should...

Writing about life implies to live your life first-Nyiur Saka Brata 311201011

In a frenetic  life, peace is what I have always sought. I wonder how I can find peace in my anxious life. I wonder how I can find peace in my anxious life. The more I try to seek, the more I lose myself. But as it turned out, peace existed even when I hadn't looked for it.  Peace appeared in my mother's smile that relieved my tired soul, my father's hug that suppressed anger, my brother's joke that eased wounds, and the children's laughter that reminded me of the meaning of life. For me, life is nothing more than being peaceful.  #undira #Englishliterature

Autumn Snow

A lover once said, Love is an unsolved puzzle If you try to go deep down into it You'll find illogical riddle. So I took a long ride Far away from your sight Trying to make things right To find what's left in your heart. Then I found your charm as autumn snow Makes me falling by the breeze Yet, the cold leaves my body freezing Turned me into failing. Now I learn that you're a ghost who's still breathing And I'm just a shadow who catches a feeling.

The Issue of Toxic Masculinity

“Don’t cry, be a man.” That’s how toxic masculinity sounds.  Many men hide their sadness just because they don't want to be considered a crybaby. They cry in silence because "only women" can cry. Unconsciously, this characteristic is problematic if you look at them. This statement highlights just how much the issue of toxic masculinity has become a prominent topic of discussion recently. This concept of toxic masculinity that has been around since the 20th century stems from the construction of a patriarchal society that assumes that men always behave rudely and mightily. In fact, toxic masculinity is the pressure on men to perform behavior with excessive standards. Unconsciously, toxic masculinity leads to mental health problems for men because it directs men not to show sadness and complain which means that men can only express courage and anger. In addition, toxic masculinity also describes that men can do anything on their own,...
